Internet Scams By The scam defenders
There are so many different types of internet scams. These include email scams:
- Phishing:
- sending you an email claiming that it comes from your bank, ebay, paypal, or something similar and your data is out of date. You click on the link and go to an exact look alike site and give up your password, account number and other information and your account is all theirs and is emptied out before you know it. Understand no company asks for your information through an email. Always type your bank's URL in the browser yourself or use your previous bookmarked URL.
- Lottery winnings:
- You get an email that you've won a lottery (typically in Europe UK or whatever). They ask for your bank number and personal information so they can send you the money owed. I don't know what happens next but probably they ask for money for handling or something. You send your money and that's that.
- Dead rich relative scam:
- You get an email to "Dear beloved" or something similar "Dear brother in Christ," "Dear brother in Allah" and so on. Most of these come from Nigeria, Liberia and places like that. The content of the email says that the relative has died and has left say fifty million and they need your help to get it out of the country. For this you get a commission of say thirty percent. This scam has all sorts of variations. They may claim to be a bank manager or someone similar and a rich client has died without any heirs and you will be named as the heir and get the money out of the country.
There may be links to BBC, CNN or other reputable company showing that the minister, general etc died. Once you are hooked they ask for money to free your millions for starting expenses. Remember the only way someone can scam you, is through your greed.
Then there are worms and sites which download malware, spyware, and viruses to your computer. There also a myltitude of make money at home and internet marketing scams.
Buyer beware. No get rich quick and easy system works for you (they sure work well for the scammers who sell them). Any method which works is going to take hard work and plenty of consistant persistance.
The best way to deal with these is to use your common sense. I wrote this answer recently on Yahoo Answers about Internet scams:
Be careful and use your sense as others have suggested.
Understand that there's no such thing as a free lunch. If it sounds too good to be true - it's not true.
People do not send you as an individual emails to "undisclosed recipients."
Look at the actual address of any website in an email. No bank, government organization and such will eve ask for your account number, password and such information. If you get an email asking for information type the website address in your browser or go to that site from your bookmarked link.
Use a good firewall and virus scanner.
Use firefox browser with appropriate defensive addons.
Of course the only way to be one hundred percent safe is to disconnect from internet and become a hermit. So the real issue is to be careful and use precautions. No matter whet you think you have been scammed in your life.
You , like me, may have used a contractor who claimed he was licenced but was not.
You, like me, may have paid for a sotware which did not work while you signed your rights away by siging a contract you did not read.
Remember that if it looks too go to be true - it will not be true. Trust your original intuition.
Always, avoid if you have any doubts at all.
If it is a real deal, it will available tomorrow. They will let you do your research since they know the product is good. If they try to hurry you into a decision just leave.
